The area’s past is also linked to Native American settlements, particularly those drawn to local salt springs, and early European explorers and settlers. 

Prehistoric and early history

• Native American settlements: The land was inhabited by prehistoric tribes, with the Meramec River valley being particularly rich in artifacts due to salt springs. Sites like Minnie HaHa were large trade centers.
• Early European settlement: The area was part of the larger Louisiana territory. French explorers and settlers arrived, and by the 1770s, settlers reached the Sunset Hills area.
• Salt springs: Early settlers, like Gabriel Cerre, were drawn to the area for its salt springs, which were crucial for survival and trade. 

19th and early 20th centuries

• Rural area: The region was primarily rural, with farms and orchards, and Watson Road was a key road, named after landowner Wesley Watson.
• Brewing barons: In the early 1900s, the area became a popular spot for wealthy brewing families, such as the Lemp, Griesedieck, and Anheuser-Busch families, to build summer homes.
• Oldest homes: Some of the oldest homes, like the William VonEime home, date back to the mid-1800s. 

Incorporation and modern history

• Incorporation: Sunset Hills was officially incorporated as a city in June 1957.
• Government and development:
  • 1973: The city established its own police department.
  • 1975: A 23-acre plot of land was purchased for a city park.
  • 1980: A new City Hall was built.
• Expansion: The city expanded significantly through annexations in the 1990s (1994, 1995, 1996, 1997).
